A little about the virtue of friendliness.
What is Friendliness?
Friendliness is being a friend.  It is taking an interest in other people.  It is going out of your way to make others feel welcome or to make a stranger feel at home.  When you are friendly, you happily share your belongings, time, ideas, and feelings.  You share the good times and the bad times together.  Friendliness is the best cure for loneliness.

Why Practice It?
Friendliness keeps you and others from feeling lonely or left out.  It helps people feel that they belong.  When something good or bad happens, it feels good to share it with a friend.  Friendships don’t just happen - they are made by people who are willing to be themselves with each other.

Senior School Swimming Sports
This years swimming sports are on Monday the 15th of March, at the Splash Centre. It will be starting at 12:30, and we hope to be finished by 2:30.  There is a change in format to this year’s event.  We have done away with the “Championship / Non Championship” sections where students could choose where they wanted to swim.  Before the swimming sports day, all students will have been given an opportunity to swim a length of the Splash Centre in the three stokes we race.  Students will then be grouped with others of similar ability for the
swimming sports races, much the same as our athletics sports format, (graded finals).  Students who have difficulty in confidently swimming a length of the Splash Centre pool will participate in an alternative
swimming programme.  We will all walk to the pool, leaving school promptly at 11:45 and returning by 3:00pm.  We invite all who are able to walk with us.  Children will need all swimming gear and sunhats.
The PTA Annual General Meeting will be held on the 9th March at 7pm followed by the monthly PTA meeting.
New members encouraged to attend.

Six Hat Thinking - One Hat At A Time
Just as teachers use the metaphor “Put on your thinking caps” to engage student’s thinking, The Six Hat Thinking strategy uses the metaphor of different coloured hats to engage students in different types of thinking.
Using the hats demonstrates to students that thinking is a skill to be learned and improved upon with practice.  Six Hat Thinking provides a framework for focused, constructive and productive thought.  It acknowledges that feelings and emotions are an important part of thinking.  The process is fun to teach and learn at all levels.  Each of the coloured hats stands for one kind of thinking and when a particular hat is called upon, only the type of thinking represented by that hat is allowed at that time.  In this way, students may look at an idea or issue from six very different viewpoints before deciding upon the value of an idea or upon a course of action to be taken.
The six different thinking hats developed by Edward de Bono include:
RED HAT: feelings Students describe how they feel about something
YELLOW HAT:  strengths Students consider what is good about something
BLACK HAT: weaknesses Students identify potential problems or difficulties
GREEN HAT:  new ideas What is possible?  What can this lead to?
WHITE HAT: information Students access the truth about something.
BLUE HAT: thinking Students consider what thinking is needed to
Understand or to move forward.
At St Johns Hill School this thinking strategy is introduced at new entrant level, and is developed, extended and enhanced as students move up the school.

Voluntary Donation
Thank you to all who are paying or setting up payment of their voluntary donation.  $100 per child or $250 a family of 3 or more.
The following methods may be used to make payments:
· Cheque or cash
(No eftpos available at the school office)
·            Automatic payment  (Slips are available from office).
·         Internet Banking option should be made to:
                St Johns Hill School  03 0791 0552038-00
[please quote student name as key].
As a Decile 10 school we receive significantly less funding than that of lower decile schools.  It is believed by the Government that families attending high decile schools have much better ability to financially support their school.  Although not as simple as that, the school does appreciate your contribution through your voluntary donation and also the help and support provided to our hard working PTA in their fundraising ventures, ie: selling tickets to friends/family/neighbours etc.  Thank you.

Health Promoting Schools Meeting
“Health Promoting Schools are schools which display, in everything they say and do, support and commitment to enhancing the emotional, social, physical and moral wellbeing of their school community”
(World Health Organisation)
Monday 15th March at 12.30pm in the School Meeting Room

Parent Teacher Meeting
Thank you to all parents/caregivers who were able to make this meeting.  It was good to be able to share with our community how our students are currently achieving against expectations, to
further share how we keep you informed about your child’s progress and achievement  and also information about National Standards.  Teachers also appreciated your attendance so that they could share with you aspects of their classroom programmes and expectations.  It is well known through research, that strong partnership between school and home, where education is valued, helps the maximise students progress and achievement.
